On 27th April 1716 at Breacachadh Castle in the Isle of Coll the ‘gentlemen of Mull’, the officers of Clan Maclean battalion, surrendered their arms to James Campbell of Stonefield, Justice and Sheriff Depute of Argyll. It was an incident that not only marked the end of the ’15 rebellion for the Macleans’ it also, although they did not know it at the time, was the last time the Macleans were to be united as a military unit under the command of their own officers.
